Cape Town's water crisis

Cape Town, South Africa’s second most famous city, is moving towards “Day Zero”: the day taps run dry. This is expected in mid-May, weeks after the city’s new water supplies are due. Cape Town is quite used to surviving dry years. Water restrictions get it through and then dams refill, thanks to the wet years that usually follow. But this time it’s different. Never in recorded history has Cape Town encountered a drought of such severity for three consecutive years.
The only viable, long-term solution to the water crisis is large-scale desalination. This has been proposed many times and is continually shot down due to high capital outlay and that it may become a white-elephant if the rain patterns return to normal.
I believe that safe water for everyone is not possible, but absolutely necessary. Cape Town teaches me that water crisis is rarely a matter of rainfall, understanding disasters like drought involves seeing disasters from a different perspectives. Water crisis affects more the poor because this means that for them they have to wait and see what the government comes up with and observe whether they will be able to cut back on food to be able to buy water.

I think that cape town engineers must come up wit a plan to invert a water purifying machine and they must extract sea water and purify it if that is even possible.
ReplyDeleteI think Cape Town settlers should come back to South Africa because there is high rainfall rate .
ReplyDeleteIt all starts when people are urged to conserve and preserve nature. We all have a right to clean water and that is why government needs to come up with a quick plan. More purifying firms are needed so that people will not drink dirty water
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't survive in Cape Town, a waterless city.
ReplyDeleteLiving there in the future when I'm monied was one of my wishes, not anymore...
This crisis is serious and the government needs to apply serious measures in taking care of it.
We really need to preserve nature because it helps us. ....we are actually depended in it. Without water we are dead.
ReplyDeleteI know that drought is something that no one has control over it but I think government must come up with a plan.
ReplyDeletePeople were always told to save water as it is a very scarce resoure in our cuntry. I am not saying people from Cape Town did not, they did. But I believe they wil be alright in no time. Our prayers for our beloved Cape Town.
ReplyDeleteMany villages have been surviving drought for many years without government intervention but now that it's struck the Western cape already it's a HUGE crisis...
ReplyDeleteWhen water is still available people don't listen when they are told to save water. Now that they don't have water they start to cry. People you have to think for the future, you cannot start saving water when water is not available. I feel bad for you guys, i pray for the rain in Cape Town.
ReplyDeleteWater is a very generous natural resource that needs to be conserved for the survival of the human population. Look how at WSU we sometimes struggle to have water due to cuts, but in CT they struggle to live due to the Drought.
ReplyDeleteWater is a basic resource for all living organism I'm wondering how they will survive knowing that we use water everyday and everything requires water.
ReplyDeleteThis crisis is wrong on so many levels I mean water is a basic need after all..
ReplyDeleteThis crisis is wrong on so many levels I mean water is a basic need after all..
ReplyDeleteGovernment must try by all means to save people from this crisis, that is: prevent this from spreading to other provinces. But this is all attended to and given a name crisis because there are whites involved whereas there are still rural places that do not have water providers at this time of the years.
ReplyDeleteWater is a basic need for a human living, everybody knows that. DA has failed Western Cape, in fact the province as a whole. This was supposed to be overseen sometime before it could even strike so that by now they would have even found some measures to tackle the issue.
ReplyDeleteHow will they live without water, what will happen now is that they will use dirty water and that is unhealthy, Government must intervene.
ReplyDeleteThis is a matter of life and death so it must not be taken lightly, water is very important.
ReplyDeleteI'm not even interested to visit that province tjoo I can't stand being thirsty the whole day
